It not just ended the British rule in India, but also <\/span><b>bifurcated the nation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into two dominions: India and Pakistan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move of bifurcation of India was opposed by many sections, including certain organisations such as <\/span><b>Hindu Mahasabha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nathuram Godse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the members of the Hindu Mahasabha, believed that Gandhiji was <\/span><b>too accommodative of demands of Pakistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially when India-Pakistan were involved in a war.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 30 January 1948, Gandhiji was staying in <\/span><b>Birla House in Delhi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He used to conduct daily prayer meetings in the evening, which were open to all.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the day of the assassination, Gandhiji was moving towards the <\/span><b>venue of the prayer meeting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when Godse, the assassin, came out of the crowd into Gandhiji\u2019s path.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He fired <\/span><b>three shots at Gandhiji<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The bullets struck Gandhiji\u2019s <\/span><b>chest, stomach, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> groin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and he collapsed on the ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>assassin was apprehended<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the military personnel who were at the spot, his pistol snatched away and beaten by the crowd before police took him into custody.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gandhiji was <\/span><b>pronounced dead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the same day. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India announced the death of Gandhiji through a radio broadcast.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>After-Math of Gandhiji\u2019s Assassination:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Anti-Brahmin Riots:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite calls for peace, there was violence reported in the country, especially against <\/span><b>Brahmins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Bombay province.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chitpavan Brahmins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the sub-group to which Godse belonged, were the main targets of violence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Gandhiji\u2019s Funeral:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than <\/span><b>two million people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took part in the five-mile-long\u00a0funeral\u00a0procession that took over five hours to reach Raj Ghat from Birla House.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gandhiji\u2019s mortal remains were <\/span><b>cremated traditionally<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ashes were collected and later immersed in rivers and seas across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Trial and Punishment of Godse:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Godse\u2019s trial<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began in May 1948 at a special court set up in\u00a0Delhi\u2019s Red Fort. The judge was Atma Charan and the prosecution was led by CK Daphtary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those arrested include <\/span><b>Godse, Narayan Apte and five others<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vinayak Savarkar was also one among those arrested.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the trial, Godse, Apte, and five others were convicted of the crime. <\/span><b>Godse and Apte were sentenced to death <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while Savarkar was acquitted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on an appeal filed in Punjab High Court, Dattatraya Parchure and Shankar Kistayya were acquitted of all charges. The <\/span><b>charges against Godse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were upheld.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Governor-General of India, <a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/upsc-notes\/rajagopalachari-formula-1945\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C Rajagopalachari <\/a><\/span><b>rejected their mercy petitions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both Godse and Apte were hanged on November 15, 1949, in <\/span><b>Ambala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jail.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Political Churnings:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Gandhiji\u2019s assassination, the Government of India, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, imposed a ban on <\/span><b>Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, accusing it of being involved in the conspiracy to assassinate Gandhiji.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proponents of right-wing ideology, such as <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/upsc-notes\/the-revolutionary-activities-in-maharashtra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vinayak Damodar Savarkar<\/a>\u00a0and M S Golwalkar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, were also arrested and put on trial. However, many of them were acquitted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>death and funeral of Gandhiji<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped consolidate the authority of the new Indian state under Nehru.
