UPSC Prelims GS Syllabus

UPSC CSE (Union Public Service Commission Civil Service Examination) is conducted by UPSC every year to recruit candidates for various Civil Services positions in the Indian government, including IAS, IPS, IRS and many others.

Moreover, UPSC CSE is known to be one of the most challenging and competitive exams in India. Every year, thousands of candidates appear for UPSC CSE Examination. Also, the exam consists of three stages: Preliminary exam, Main exam, and Personality test (interview).

UPSC CSE Prelims GS Syllabus 2023

The UPSC Prelims syllabus can be divided into two parts:

  • General Studies Paper I

The first paper of the UPSC Prelims Exam is General Studies 1 (GS-1) which includes Geography, History, Art & Culture, Polity, Economy, Environment & Ecology, General Science, Science & Technology and Current Affairs.

  • CSAT or General Studies Paper-II

The second paper of the UPSC Prelims Exam is CSAT/ General Studies 2 (GS-2), which includes Comprehension, Interpersonal skills, including communication skills, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Decision-making and problem-solving, General mental ability, Basic numerical skills (orders of magnitude, numbers & their relations, etc.) (Class X level), Data Interpretation (graphs, charts, tables, data sufficiency etc.) (Class X level).

  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialisation
