Submergence of Sangameshwara Temple
- Submergence: The Temple was first submerged after the Srisailam Dam was constructed in 1981, and first re-surfaced in 2003.
- Post that he Temple remains underwater for eight months every year when water level at Srisailam reaches 842 ft.
About The Sangameswara Temple
- Sangameswaram is considered as ‘vayuvya dwaram’ to Srisailam
- Presiding Deity: The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and has a Neem wood “Lingam”
- The kshetram: It also has temples of Surya, Mrityunjaya, Saraswathi, Subrahmanya swamy, Anjaneya swamy and Narasimha swamy.
- Location: The temple is located in the Kothapalli mandal, Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh, India.
- It is located near Muchumarri village at the confluence of the Krishna and Bhavanasi rivers, in the foreshore of the Srisailam reservoir.
- Legend: The temple’s wooden Lingam, Sangameshwaram, is believed to have been installed by Dharmaraja, the eldest of the Pandavas, after their visit to Srisailam Mallikarjuna temple
- Confluence of Seven Rivers: The Temple holds a special religious significance and is named ‘Sangameshwara” as it is situated at a confluence of Seven Rivers, namely,
- Bhavanasi, Krishna River and its five rivers tributaries namely, Veni, Tunga, Bhadra, Bheemarathi and Malapaharini
- Built by: The Present day Temple was built by Pulakeshin II of the Chalukyas in 740AD.
- Features:
- There is a relief of a large Nagaraja on the ceiling of the Temple
- Architectural Style: The Temple is built in Nagara Style on an Elevated Platform and with Fortified walls and has 12 large pillars.

The Srisailam Dam:
- River: It is constructed across the Krishna River
- It is situated near Srisailam temple town and is the 2nd largest capacity working hydroelectric station in India.
- Location: The dam was constructed in a deep gorge in the Nallamala Hills in between Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh and Nagarkurnool district, Telangana at 300 m (980 ft) above sea level.
- Water holding Capacity: The project has an estimated live capacity to hold 178.74 Tmcft at its full reservoir level
