What is Garba? A Celebration of Femininity and Life’s Symbolism

  • About: It is a traditional Indian folk dance that honors, worships, and celebrates the feminine form of divinity.
    • The dance is traditionally performed during the festival of Navratri. It is performed majorly in the state of Gujarat.
    • The dance originated in villages of Gujarat where the entire community participated.
  • Symbolism
    • Honor: The dance honors, worships, and celebrates the feminine form of divinity. The word ‘garba’ refers to the womb.
    • Symbolism: The dance is performed in a circle around a clay lantern with a light inside, called a garbha deep (“womb lamp”).
    • Interpretation: The lamp around which the dance is conducted, represents life, particularly a fetus inside the womb.

Origin and Evolution: Tradition, Unity, and Cultural Influence

  • Taali Garba: People dance leaning against one another and use their legs and hands to make symbolic motions in unison. They have to clap after each step.
  • Tran Taali Garba: After one complete step, the dancer has to clap three times.
  • Garba Hinch: The participants form a circle, and clap while moving forward in a circular pattern. As the speed of the beats increases, the dance also increases.
  • Daandiya: It symbolizes a fictitious battle between Durga and Mahishasura in which dandiya represents the Goddess’ sword.
    • Influence on Other Art Forms: It has influenced modern plays, dances, dramas, television shows as well as movies.

Musical Evolution: Tradition and Fusion

  • Role of Music: It  is usually associated with Gujarati folk music. Despite new changes, the songs have managed to remain rooted in traditional culture.
  • Traditional Instruments: Traditional Indian percussion instruments such as dholak, tabla, and dhol are used in garba music.
  • Fusion: In recent years, music has transformed itself through fusion. Traditional along with modern instruments are used to provide a unique experience.

  • Traditional Garba: It is performed by women, dancing in concentric circles around an earthen lamp representing the Shakti goddess.
  • Raas Garba: It is performed with Dandiya Raas where dandiya sticks are also involved. These sticks symbolize the swords which goddess Durga had used to fight during her battle.
  • Contemporary Interpretations: It is an amalgamation of garba and dandiya raas. The difference between the two folk dances is usually blurred to create a sort of fusion that incorporates both the dance forms together.
  • Ghagra-Choli: Ghagra-Choli symbolizes unity, devotion and joy among the communities when they gather to worship during Navratri.

    • Honoring Goddess Durga: It is a dance done to thank goddess Durga for her persistence and hard work in bringing peace to the world, by slaying the demon Mahishasura.

  • Navaratri Celebrations in Gujarat: In the state of Gujarat, Navaratri celebrations are constituted by arti, followed by dance. Dandiya Raas, which involves dancing with dandiya sticks, is also performed.
  • Dussehra in Northern India: In parts of north India, Ramlila, which is a dance-drama depicting the life of Lord Ram, is organized. It starts on the first day of Navratri and ends on the occasion of ‘Dussehra’.
