About the World Science Day for Peace and Development

  • Aim: The World Science Day for Peace and Development seeks to spread the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives. 
    • Promoting national and international solidarity regarding science between countries.
    • Renewing the national and international commitment to the use of science for the benefit of societies.
    • Drawing attention to the challenges faced by science in raising support for the scientific endeavor.
  • Partners: The day involves collaboration between governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations, UNESCO National Commissions, scientific and research institutions, professional associations, the media, science teachers, and schools.
  • The theme for 2023: The theme for this year is “Building Trust in Science”.
  • Origin: World Science Day for Peace and Development was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2001 as a positive outcome of the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest. 
    • It sought to fulfill the commitment to attaining the goals proclaimed in the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge every year. 
    • The first World Science Day for Peace and Development was celebrated on November 10 2002 under UNESCO auspices.
    • The reason behind celebrating the day is to focus on the importance of the role of science and scientists for sustainable societies and involving citizens in science endeavors. 
  • Outcomes: The day has produced many concrete projects, programmes, and funding for science around the world. 
    • It has helped to foster cooperation between scientists living in regions marred by conflict, such as the creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO).
