Kerala’s traditional martial art form, Kalaripayattu, has sparked controversy ahead of the 38th National Games, scheduled to begin on January 28, 2025, in Uttarakhand.

• The Indian Kalaripayattu Federation has raised concerns over its listing to the “demonstration section” after being part of the competition section in the 37th National Games held in 2023.

About Kalaripayattu

•  Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial arts globally, integrating combat techniques, physical training, and healing practices.
• Origins:
  • Originated in Kerala, the term combines “Kalari” (place of combat) and “Payattu” (fighting) in Malayalam.
  • The first mention of Kalari appears in Tamil Sangam literature, describing a battlefield or combat arena.
• History: Mythology credits Parasurama, a warrior sage, with creating Kalaripayattu.
• Training Stages:
  • Maippayattu: Body conditioning phase.
  • Kolthari: Training with wooden weapons, incorporating movements of animals like elephants, lions, and snakes.
  • Angathari: Introduction to sharp metal weapons.
  • Verumkai: Bare-hand combat focusing on anatomy.
• Styles: 
  • Northern style emphasizes weapons and linear movements.
  • Southern style allows movement in any direction.
• Global Influence: Introduced to China by Bodhidharma in the 5th century, leading to the development of Kung Fu.

About the National Games

• It is a  multi-sport event organized by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to bring together athletes from across India.
• The National Games were initially envisioned to be a biennial event. 
  • However, logistical and procedural issues have meant that they have been held with varying gaps over the years
  • The ALL India Olympic Committee established after the 1920 Olympics organised the first National Games in 1924 in Lahore.
• 38th Edition: Hosted by Uttarakhand, starting on January 28, 2025.
  • Features the mascot “Mauli” and the torch “Tejaswini.”
• Symbols:
  • Logo: Highlights Uttarakhand’s Himalayan peaks, the Ganga River, and its biodiversity.
