Key Points:

  • Russians claimed the attack was carried out by two Ukrainian sea drones, but Ukraine did not take direct responsibility.
  • In response, Russia launched a massive airstrike on the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa.
  • Russia announced withdrawal from a UN-brokered deal allowing Ukraine to export grain via the Black Sea, where a naval blockade was enforced.

About Crimea Bridge:

  • The Kerch Bridge, also known as Crimea Bridge, is the only direct link between the transport network of Russia and the Crimean peninsula.
  • The bridge that passes over the Kerch Strait was inaugurated in 2018, four years following Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
About Kerch Strait:

  • The Kerch Strait is located in Eastern Europe.
  • It serves as a waterway that connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov.
  • This strait acts as a natural boundary, separating the Kerch Peninsula in Crimea from the Taman Peninsula in Russia.
  • Its name is derived from the Crimean city of Kerch.

The Kerch Bridge is crucial for Russia due to several reasons:

  • Symbolic Importance: The bridge holds symbolic significance as it symbolizes Russia’s control over Crimea after the 2014 annexation.
    • It represents Russia’s territorial ambitions and its assertion of power in the region.
  • Administrative Significance: Prior to the construction of the bridge, there was no direct land connection between the Russian mainland and Crimea.
    • The bridge serves as a critical administrative link, facilitating the movement of goods, people, and military personnel between the two regions.
  • Operational Necessity: The bridge plays a vital operational role in supporting Russian troops stationed in Crimea. It serves as a logistical supply link, ensuring a steady flow of essential resources to the troops in the southern region.
  • Military Strategy: The bridge is a part of Russia’s broader military strategy in the region. By securing a “land bridge” from mainland Russia to Crimea, Russia aims to strengthen its military presence in the Black Sea region and project power in neighboring territories.
  • Vulnerability of Alternative Routes: While Russia has established a land bridge connecting Crimea through the Donbas and Kherson, these routes are not far from the frontline and are exposed to potential Ukrainian attacks.
    • The Kerch Bridge remains a safer and more efficient logistical route for the Russian forces.
  • Deterrence: The bridge serves as a deterrent against any attempts by Ukraine or other countries to challenge Russia’s control over Crimea.
    • It reinforces Russia’s position in the region and acts as a show of strength.
