The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the premier civil services in India. It is a highly coveted position that requires not only intellectual acumen but also physical fitness and endurance. The selection process for IPS officers includes IPS Physical eligibility criteria like physical eligibility tests.  

IPS Physical Eligibility Criteria:

As an IPS officer’s work can be physically taxing and tough, there are stringent IPS Physical Eligibility Criteria. IPS officers are in charge of upholding law and order, stopping and looking into criminal activity, and defending the public. They could be expected to carry out physically taxing duties, such as pursuing criminals or apprehending suspects, in addition to working long hours in challenging circumstances.

The UPSC sets the IPS Physical Eligibility Criteria for IPS officers. The physical specifications for an IPS officer are as follows:

  • Height Standards
  • Chest Standards
  • Eyesight Standards

The table below represents the overall IPS Physical eligibility criteria for both female and male candidates:

IPS Physical Eligibility Criteria: Height Requirements

Height is a crucial parameter in the IPS Physical eligibility criteria. It ensures that officers have a commanding presence and can effectively manage law and order situations. The minimum height requirements are as follows:

  • Male Candidates: Minimum height should be 165 cm. However, for candidates belonging to certain categories such as Scheduled Tribes (ST) and those from the North-Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and the Gorkha community, the minimum height requirement is relaxed to 160 cm.
  • Female Candidates: Minimum height should be 150 cm. For the same categories mentioned above, the minimum height requirement is relaxed to 145 cm.

IPS Physical Eligibility Criteria: Chest Measurement

Chest measurement is another vital IPS Physical eligibility criterion, particularly for male candidates. It is essential for ensuring respiratory capacity and overall physical robustness. The chest measurement requirements are:

  • Male candidates: Minimum chest girth should be 84 cm, with a 5 cm expansion.
  • Female candidates: Minimum chest girth should be 79 cm, with a 5 cm expansion.

IPS Physical Eligibility Criteria: Eyesight Standards

Good eyesight is critical for IPS officers as they need to be vigilant and observant in their duties. The eyesight requirements as per IPS Physical eligibility criteria are detailed as below. The below table includes parameters for both distant and near vision of IPS officers:

Distant Vision: Better eye (corrected vision): 6/6 or 6/9
Worse eye (corrected vision): 6/12 or 6/9
Near Vision: Better eye: N6
Worse eye: N9

Candidates should also be free from color blindness and night blindness, as these conditions can severely impact their ability to perform in various situations, especially those requiring keen observation and rapid response.

IPS Physical eligibility criteria: Hearing Standards

Hearing ability is equally important for IPS officers, as it ensures they can effectively communicate and respond to auditory signals and instructions. As per the IPS Physical eligibility criteria, the hearing standards are:

Candidates must be able to hear a forced whisper from a distance of 610 cm in a quiet room in each ear separately.

General Physical and Medical Standards of IPS Physical eligibility criteria

In addition to the specific IPS Physical eligibility criteria mentioned above, there are general physical and medical standards that candidates must meet:

  • General Health: Candidates should be in good mental and physical health and free from any physical defect or disease that could interfere with the performance of their duties.
  • Blood Pressure: Blood pressure should be within normal limits. Any deviation needs to be thoroughly investigated and assessed by medical professionals.
  • Cardiovascular System: Candidates should not have any cardiovascular conditions that could impair their performance.
  • Musculoskeletal System: Candidates should have a well-developed physique and muscular system. They should not have any significant deformity, such as flat foot, knock knees, bow legs, or any other skeletal abnormality that could hinder their efficiency.
  • Respiratory System: The respiratory system should be in good condition. Any chronic disease affecting the lungs can disqualify the candidate.
  • Ear: IPS candidates need to have healthy ear canals and strong hearing. The threshold for hearing impairment in the 1000–4000 Hz range should not exceed 30 dB.
  • Nervous System: There should be no evidence of any disease of the nervous system or psychiatric disorder.
  • Abdomen: Candidates should not have any abdominal disease or evidence of hernia. Any surgical procedure should be thoroughly healed and free from complications.
  • Urine Test: A routine urine test is conducted to check for any abnormalities or diseases.

IPS Physical Eligibility Criteria: Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

Apart from the medical and physical standards, candidates must also pass a Physical Efficiency Test (PET). The PET comes under the IPS Physical eligibility criteria and is designed to assess the physical endurance and strength of the candidates.
