The official Language Commission is a constitutional body set up under Article 344 of the Indian Constitution.
The commission was to be constituted ten years after it was formed in 1955 through a notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs, government of India.
The members of the Official Language Commission are appointed by the President of India
The commission is made up of a Chairman and other members representing the different languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. As a convention, the Union Home Minister is elected as the chairman of the Committee.
Official language is the one that is chosen by a government as its official medium of communication. This language has certain rights to be used in defined situations.
Hindi language, written in Devanagari script will be the official language of the union. However, the numerals used will not be in Devanagari form.
