Megasthenes: Geography, Society and Governance of the Mauryan Empire

Megasthenes, a Greek diplomat and historian, provided valuable insights into ancient India during Chandragupta Maurya’s rule. Despite his book, the Indica, being lost, its essence has been pieced together from other ancient writings. Megasthenes is hailed as the “father of Indian history” for being the first to depict ancient India’s geography, society, and governance.

Megasthenes and the Insight into Ancient India: A Journey through History

1. Megasthenes: The Father of Indian History

  • Shedding Light on Ancient India: The life of ancient Indians during Chandragupta Maurya’s administration was shed light on by the comprehensive works of Megasthenes, a Greek diplomat, historian, and ethnographer.
  • Partial Restoration of Megasthenes’ “Indica”: Even though his book, the Indica, was lost to the passage of time, it has been partially restored via the use of literary works by other authors.
  • The Father of Indian History: Megasthenes is referred to as “the father of Indian history” since he was the first to depict ancient India.

2.  India According to Megasthene

India is described in Megasthenes’ Indica as follows:

  • Geography: 
      • India is a country with a quadrilateral shape, bordered to the east and south by the Great Sea, to the west by the Indus River, and to the north by the Emodus mountain.
      • The Hindu Kush, Pamir and the Himalayas are all referred to as a single mountain range.
      • The region of Scythia inhabited by Sacae is located beyond the Emodus.
      • India is bordered by Bacteria and Ariana in addition to Scythia.
      • South India was mentioned as the Pandya country stating “occupying the portion of India which lies southward and extends to the sea”
      • India is home to numerous sizable, navigable rivers that flow through the plains after rising in the northern Himalayas.
      • The names of Ganges and Indus have been mentioned with their geographical descriptions.
  • Society: India is home to numerous unique races, all of which are indigenous, due to its vast size. 
      • Absence of Indian Colonies Beyond India: There isn’t a colony outside of India, nor have Indians established any elsewhere.
      • Law by Ancient Indian Philosophers: it outlawed slavery,  The law permits unequal property distribution yet treats everyone equally.
      • Diverse indigenous Races: inhabit India, without any foreign colonies.
      • Indian Lifestyle: Indians enjoy abundant food, pure air, and are skilled in arts.
      • Rare instances of theft; wine consumed only during sacrifices.
  • Caste System: Divides Indian population into seven castes, each with distinct roles and privileges.
  • Philosophers, farmers, herders, artisans, military, overseers, and councilors.
  • Economy: Abundance of gold, silver, and fertile plains; widespread irrigation practices.
      • Two Crop Cycles: annually; no famines due to agricultural practices and respect for farmers.
      • Land Ownership: primarily vested in the king; no slavery; all Indians considered free.
  • Polity: Pataliputra, the capital, described as a strategically built city with democratic governance.
    • King: actively involved in administration, assisted by councilors and assessors.
    • Superior Civil Officials: oversee district and town administration, with severe criminal laws.
  • Military Administration: Army organized into six bodies overseeing infantry, cavalry, war chariots, war elephants, transport, and navy.
    • Regular salaries, arms, and equipment provided by the state.
  • Law and Justice: King administers justice, with severe punishments including mutilation for crimes.
    • No Written Laws: administration relies on royal decrees and traditional practices.
