Recently, the All-India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) hosted the Second National Seminar SAUSHRUTAM Shalya Sangoshti in honour of Sushruta Jayanti 2024 (15th July).
Maharishi Sushruta
- About: Maharishi Sushruta was an ancient physician from Kashi (Varanasi), revered as the Father of Indian Medicine and Surgery.
Key Contributions
- Books: The author of Sushruta Samhita, written in Sanskrit, part of the Great Trilogy of Ayurvedic Medicine alongside Charaka Samhita by Maharishi Charak and Astanga Hridaya by Vagabhata.
- Coverage of the Books: It extensively covers pathology, anatomy, surgical management, as well as the treatment of 12 types of fractures, 6 varieties of dislocations, skin grafting, and rhinoplasty (a technique for reconstructing the nose), among other topics.
- Contributions to Surgery: Sushruta, hailed as the ‘Father of Surgery’, introduced cadaver dissections for anatomical study, pioneered the use of anaesthesia with substances like wine and henbane, and specialised in cataract surgery.
- Other Contributions: In addition to his contributions to general surgery, Sushruta documented treatments for 12 types of fractures and six types of dislocations.
- Contributions to Anatomy: Sushruta made significant contributions to anatomy by detailing the study of human anatomy through cadaver dissections in the Sushruta Samhita. He emphasized the importance of understanding human body structure for aspiring surgeons.
