About NIRF

NIRF

  • NIRF is a system used by the Indian government to rank colleges and universities.
  • It was started in 2015 to help students and parents choose the best institutions.
  • Under NIRF,  institutions are ranked under 11 different categories – overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental and research.

Key Issues with the NIRF Ranking

  • Vast diversity:  India has vast diversity in institutions, disciplines, and educational standards which make ranking very difficult.
  • Limited research metrics:  NIRF primarily focuses on research articles for rankings but ignores other important aspects such as  books, book chapters, monographs, .
  • Inaccurate data: NIRF uses commercial databases such as Scopus and Web of Science for bibliometric data, which can be problematic due to biases and manipulation of data.
