How Many Papers in UPSC Prelims?

The UPSC Prelims exam is the first stage of the Civil Services Examination, and it includes two papers, Paper I and Paper II. Candidates have to score the minimum qualifying in General Studies Paper I and a minimum of 33% marks in General Studies Paper II (CSAT) to qualify for the passing marks.

  1. General Studies Paper I: This paper tests the candidate’s knowledge of subjects like History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, and Current Affairs. It is objective and consists of 100 questions.
  2. General Studies Paper II (CSAT): This paper, also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), evaluates the candidate’s logical reasoning, comprehension, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. It comprises 80 questions and is also objective.

How Many Papers in UPSC Mains?

The UPSC Mains exam is the second stage of the Civil Services Examination, and it includes nine papers. These papers are designed to test the in-depth knowledge and analytical ability of the candidates. The Mains papers are descriptive in nature. The nine papers in the UPSC Mains are categorized into Qualifying Papers and Merit-Based Papers.

1. Qualifying Papers

These papers are qualifying and do not count towards the final ranking, but they are mandatory to pass:

  • Paper A (Indian Language): Candidates must choose one Indian language from the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This paper is of 300 marks.
  • Paper B (English): This paper tests the candidate’s proficiency in English. It is also of 300 marks.

2. Merit-Based Papers

These papers are evaluated for the final ranking:

  • Paper I (Essay): Candidates must write essays on multiple topics, testing their ability to articulate and organize their thoughts. This paper carries 250 marks.
  • Paper II (General Studies I): This paper covers Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society. It is worth 250 marks.
