The Sahitya Akademi Award is presented by the National Academy of Letters to honor exceptional literary works in genres like poetry, fiction, drama, essays, and literary criticism. It aims to encourage Indian authors and preserve the linguistic diversity of the country. The award includes:
The first Sahitya Akademi Award was given in 1955. It has been presented uninterruptedly across all the languages recognized by the Sahitya Akademi, reflecting the cultural and linguistic richness of the country. This award recognizes outstanding literary works and celebrates the diversity of Indian literature.
The award process involves a meticulous and transparent multi-level evaluation:
1. General Guidelines
Subject to the provision of rule 1(2), an award is given each year for the most outstanding original book by an Indian author. The book must be published in India and in one of the languages recognized by the Sahitya Akademi. It should be first published within the five years preceding the award year.
Example: For the 2004 award, books published between 1998 and 2002 were considered.
Then, a ground list is prepared by two experts for each language.
2. Criteria for Eligibility
3. Preparation of Ground List
A ground list of eligible books is prepared annually by two experts for each language. Members of the Language Advisory Board recommend titles based on the ground list or their own preferences. The list is finalized and sent for further evaluation.
4. Preliminary Panel Review:
The recommendations are sent to a Preliminary Panel comprising 10 scholars in that language for review. Each referee recommends two books, which may be from the ground list or their own selection.
These recommendations are compiled and sent to the Jury.
5. Jury Selection:
A 3-member jury selects the winner from the recommendations made by the Preliminary Panel. Jury members receive copies of the shortlisted books for evaluation.
The Jury decides the winner by consensus or majority.
6. Declaration of Award
The Jury’s recommendation is sent to the Executive Board for formal approval. The award is announced publicly, along with the names of Jury members and the shortlisted books.
7. Miscellaneous
Canvassing by authors leads to disqualification. Books are not directly submitted by authors or publishers. Delays in recommendations may result in exclusion unless an extension is granted.
