India’s External Affairs minister has recently addressed the Japan-India-Africa Business forum virtually highlighting India’s deepening economic ties with Africa.

Key Highlights of the Address

  • Indian Model of Engagement: India prioritizes a Constructive Model of Engagement with Africa focusing on capacity-building, skill development, and technology transfer.
    • India wants to develop self-sustaining growth ecosystems in Africa with its investments.
  • Bilateral Trade with Africa: India is Africa’s fourth-largest trading partner with bilateral trade reached approximately USD 100 billion 
    • Infrastructure and Connectivity Project: India invested over USD 12 billion in concessional credit for more than 200 infrastructure projects across Africa in sectors like railways, power generation, agriculture, and water supply.
    • Development Projects: India has invested in developmental projects creating local employment opportunities including,
      • Drinking water schemes, irrigation, rural solar electrification, power plants, transmission lines, cement, sugar, and textile factories, technology parks, and railway infrastructure.
  • Multilateral Engagement: India and Africa cooperates in key forums like the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and the India-Africa Forum Summit, Voice of the Global South Summits and G20 (African Union became permanent member in the G20 during Indian Presidency).
  • Indian Initiatives Supporting Africa’s Development: 
    • The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, the Pan-African e-Network project, and high-impact community development projects strengthen capacities in healthcare, education, and digital infrastructure.
    • 19 African countries have enrolled in various courses under India’s e-learning and telemedicine initiatives ie. The e-VidyaBharti and e-ArogyaBharti network.

About The Japan-India-Africa Business Forum

  • It is a public-private forum which is conducted with the objective of strengthening Japan’s relations with India and the region to her west ie. African Union 
  • Conducted By: The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and Nikkei hosted the Japan-India-Africa Business Forum in Tokyo.
  • Evolution: The initiative has evolved by coordinating The India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) and Japan’s TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) for Africa.
  • Agenda: To discuss how to fully utilize the potential of the  growth markets in India and Africa, the challenges associated, the roles of the public and private sectors, and the outlook for building India as a business hub in this region.
  • Japan-India Cooperation Initiative for Sustainable Economic Development in Africa: The initiative is launched by Japan to promote investments by Japanese companies in India and establish business bases that will invigorate bilateral business with various African countries.
