Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary

Recently a study was conducted using the line transect method and  trap cameras to estimate sambar and cheetal populations.

  • This was the first time this mapping method was used in the sanctuary.

Recent Findings on Wildlife Population

  • Deer Population Density
    • Sambar Density: 49.5 per square km
    • Cheetal (Spotted Deer) Density: 54.15 per square km
    • The sanctuary has a total of 536 sambars and 295 cheetals.
    • Other observed species include wild boar, monkeys, rabbits, foxes, and peacocks.

About Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary

  • It is India’s first man-made wildlife sanctuary, established in 1985 over 10.87 sq. km with the aim  to support biodiversity.
  • Location: It is located near Kundal town in the Sangli district of Maharashtra.
    • The sanctuary is named after the ancient Sagareshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Vegetation: The sanctuary consists of an artificially cultivated forest with no perennial water supply
    • Comprises Southern Dry Mixed Deciduous and Southern Thorn Forest.
    • Major flora includes Tamarind, Neem, Eucalyptus, Acacia, Agave, and Khair trees.
  • Faun: Most wildlife species were artificially introduced into the sanctuary.
    • Large herbivores: Sambar, Blackbuck (extinct in the sanctuary), Chital (Spotted Deer), Muntjac (Barking Deer), and Wild Boar.
    • Small carnivores: Hyenas, Foxes, and Porcupines.
    • Birds: Peacocks and other avian species.
