The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, an event that saw 20 million Americans—10% of the U.S. population at the time—take to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.
This collective effort laid the foundation for the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of landmark environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.
Before the first Earth Day in 1970, environmental degradation in the United States was uncontrolled and largely unchecked. The widespread use of leaded gasoline, pollution-spewing industries, and a general unconcern for ecological health deteriorated the condition. Air pollution was seen as a symbol of economic success rather than a public hazard.
