World Milk Day 2025 will be celebrated globally on Sunday, June 1, 2025. This annual observance, initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in 2001, is dedicated to recognising the importance of milk as a global food and to celebrating the contributions of the dairy sector. On this day, countries across the world come together to promote the health benefits of milk, honour dairy farmers, and highlight the industry’s role in sustainable food systems.
According to the FAO, global milk production is expected to reach nearly 979 million tonnes in 2024, marking a 1.4% increase from the previous year. Asia, particularly India, China, and Pakistan, is leading this growth, largely due to increases in dairy cow numbers and better yields from large-scale dairy farms.

India is proudly recognised as the world largest milk producing country, maintaining its #1 rank in milk production since 1998.
This surge is supported by favourable farm-gate prices, lower feed costs, and the moderation of global economic challenges. Despite macroeconomic hurdles, consumer demand for dairy continues to recover, aided by lower international dairy prices and rising demand from the food services sector.
India continues to maintain its dominance as the world’s largest milk producing country, contributing over 25% of global milk production. In fact, milk production in India rose from 146.3 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 239.2 million tonnes in 2023-24, an impressive 63.56% increase over the decade. The annual growth rate stands at 5.7%, significantly higher than the global average of 2%.
India also has the highest per capita milk availability, at 471 grams per person per day, compared to the global average of 322 grams.

Although World Milk Day is widely celebrated, it has not been without controversy. Critics of the dairy industry highlight concerns related to health and animal welfare. This has given rise to World Plant Milk Day, which promotes plant-based alternatives such as soy, almond, and oat milk.
These alternatives claim to offer more environmentally friendly and ethical choices, sparking debate about the dairy industry’s future. Nonetheless, milk remains irreplaceable in many diets due to its nutrient profile and accessibility.
World Milk Day 2025 offers a moment for everyone—governments, industries, and individuals—to celebrate dairy’s enduring impact on health, nutrition, and the economy. From being the world’s largest milk producing country to leading in consumption, India plays a pivotal role in shaping global dairy trends. As the demand for dairy continues to grow and evolve, World Milk Day remains a powerful platform to spotlight its significance and sustainability.
