India and Norway To Focus On Green Maritime Technologies

India and Norway held bilateral meetings during Nor-Shipping 2025 in Oslo to deepen cooperation on green maritime technologies, sustainable development, and Arctic navigation.

  • India offers to conduct Joint Feasibility Study to operationalise Northern Sea Route (NSR) with Norway.

About Green Maritime Technologies

  • Green Maritime Technologies refer to innovative, eco-friendly solutions used in the shipping and port sectors to reduce environmental impact, especially carbon emissions, marine pollution, and fuel consumption.

About Green Coastal Shipping Programme and Green Voyage 2050

  • Green Coastal Shipping Programme: It is part of India’s push for low-emission shipping along its coastline and inland waterways.
    • Aims to reduce the carbon footprint of cargo and passenger vessels by promoting electrification, biofuels, and logistics efficiency.
  • Green Voyage 2050 : It is a global initiative led by Norway in partnership with the IMO (International Maritime Organization).
    • Helps developing countries transition to low/zero carbon maritime operations.
    • Focus areas include regulatory alignment, green fuels, energy efficiency, and training.

    • Example: Digital twin technology helps optimize port operations and ship design for better fuel efficiency.
      • A Digital Twin is a real-time virtual replica of a physical asset, like a ship, port, or engine system, that mirrors its operations using sensors, data analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Key Points From The Meeting

  • Green Maritime Collaboration: India and Norway agreed to strengthen cooperation on green shipping technologies, especially ferry system electrification, alternative fuels, and low-carbon logistics.
  • Sustainable Shipbuilding and Recycling: Both sides agreed to leverage Norway’s design expertise and India’s shipyard capacity to build eco-friendly vessels.
    • There were talks for collaboration in sustainable ship recycling, with a focus on upgrading Alang Ship Recycling Yard in Gujarat.
  • Blue Economy and Ocean Renewable Energy: There was emphasis on joint ventures in offshore wind, tidal energy, deep-sea exploration, and sustainable fisheries.
  • Seafarer Training: Norway was invited to support training in polar navigation, cybersecurity, and maritime skills.
  • Gender Inclusion: India highlighted the Saagar Mein Samman initiative.
    • The “Saagar Mein Samman” initiative is an Indian government effort aimed at enhancing gender diversity and inclusivity in the maritime sector by promoting women’s participation across roles from seafarers to port professionals.

About Northern Sea Route (NSR)

  • The Northern Sea Route (NSR) is a shipping lane that runs along the northern coast of Russia, from the Kara Sea (near Novaya Zemlya) to the Bering Strait (between Russia and Alaska).
  • It is part of the broader Arctic shipping routes and has gained increasing attention due to melting Arctic ice, which is making the passage more navigable for longer periods each year.
