Rules for Donating Blood in India

The rules for donating blood in India follow the National Blood Policy, emphasizing both safety and eligibility. Donors must meet specific medical and lifestyle criteria to ensure safety for both themselves and recipients. The Eligibility Criteria for Blood Donation include:

Age

• Must be 18 to 65 years old.
• In some cases, 16–17 year-olds may donate with consent.
  

Weight

• Minimum of 50 kg for 450 ml donation; 45 kg acceptable in some centers for 350 ml.
  

Health

• Should be in good physical and mental health.
• Free from fever, infection, or communicable diseases.
• No recent major surgery, tattoos (within 6 months), or pregnancy.
  

Haemoglobin Level

• At least 12.5 g/dl for women and 13.0 g/dl for men.
  

Other Criteria

• No alcohol 24 hours before donation.
• No antibiotic or aspirin use in the past 48–72 hours.
• Should not be breastfeeding or menstruating during donation.
• No high-risk sexual behavior or drug use history.
• A gap of 3 months between whole blood donations is mandatory.
