India’s Commitment To Pact for the Future

At the 2025 informal dialogue at the UN, India reaffirmed its commitment to the “Pact for the Future”, highlighting its role in shaping inclusive and forward-looking global governance.

About the Pact for the Future

  • The Pact for the Future is a landmark declaration adopted by consensus at the Summit of the Future held on 22 September 2024 by the UN General Assembly.
  • It was the result of extensive multi-year dialogues aimed at reforming international cooperation to address 21st-century global challenges.
  • Objective : The pact aims to make the United Nations more effective, legitimate, and inclusive, enhancing its ability to deal with modern realities like climate change, inequality, armed conflict, digital governance, and youth inclusion.
    • It seeks to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), strengthen disarmament, and improve global peace and security architecture.

Key Components of Pact for the Future

  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The pact reaffirms commitment to speeding up progress towards achieving the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement.
  • Human Rights and Gender Equality: Strengthens commitments to human rights, with a focus on women’s rights and protection of vulnerable populations during humanitarian crises.
  • Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping: Calls for reviewing UN peacekeeping operations and addressing the root causes of conflicts.
  • Disarmament: Promises to revitalise efforts toward nuclear and biological weapons disarmament, though details remain rhetorical.
  • Digital and Future Generations:
    • Global Digital Impact: Focuses on regulating artificial intelligence (AI).
    • Declaration on Future Generations: Aims to secure the well-being of future generations by aligning national and international decision-making accordingly.

India Commitment at UN

  • Call for Action-Oriented 2028 Review: India emphasized that the 2028 review of the Pact must be results-oriented and aligned with the UN@80 initiative and the 2027 SDG Summit.
    • It proposed integrating insights from sectoral reviews like the Financing for Development Conference and the World Social Summit.
  • Security Council Reform Advocacy: India reiterated the need for text-based negotiations with clear timelines to expand the UNSC and reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.
    • It opposed efforts to maintain the status quo and highlighted the necessity of real and inclusive reform.
  • Strategic Alignment with Global Platforms: India called for coherence between the Pact and ongoing reforms within the G20, WTO, IMF, and World Bank, particularly regarding fair global financing.
    • It also supported initiatives like digital cooperation, AI ethics, and inclusive development under the UN framework.
