The history of World Humanitarian Day 2025 begins from the 19 August 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. This attack killed 22 people, including Sérgio Vieira de Mello, who was serving as the UN’s Special Representative for Iraq.

In response, the United Nations General Assembly, through a resolution in 2008, designated 19 August as World Humanitarian Day. The first observance was held in 2009. Since then, the day has been marked each year to honor humanitarian workers and to raise awareness about the challenges they face.

The history of World Humanitarian Day 2025 also shows how the day has developed into a campaign-driven event. Each year, a specific theme directs attention to pressing humanitarian issues such as the protection of civilians, the recognition of women in humanitarian work, or addressing climate-related challenges.

World Humanitarian Day 2025 Theme 

World Humanitarian Day 2025 Theme is “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities.” The theme reflects the growing importance of supporting local actors while ensuring global support remains active.
