The Coffee Board of India has launched capacity-building programmes and extensive awareness  to help growers register on its mobile application for compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

  • Over 70% of Indian coffee exports go to the EU, making compliance critical.

About Coffee Board

  • Establishment: Set up under the Coffee Act, 1942.
  • Nodal Ministry: Functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
  • Headquarters: Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Mandate and Functions
    • Promotion of Coffee: Promote and develop the coffee industry through research, extension, quality improvement, and domestic as well as international marketing.
    • Research & Development: Supports scientific research in coffee cultivation and processing through research institutes like Central Coffee Research Institute (CCRI).
    • Market Development: Regulates coffee exports, promotes Indian coffee globally, and ensures compliance with international standards.
    • Technology and Quality: Introduces innovations, quality certification, and GI-tag promotion (e.g., Monsooned Malabar coffee).

Coffee Board Initiatives

  • Mobile App: Enabled registration and geo-location data uploading for exporters and growers.
  • Awareness Drives: Interactions with associations and stakeholders to promote compliance.
  • Current Status: Out of ~4.41 lakh growers, 9,000 have registered so far.
  • Capacity Building: Programmes to prepare the Indian coffee sector for smooth export transition under EUDR.
  • Coffee exports from India crossed $1.8 billion in 2024–25, maintaining above $1 billion for the 4th consecutive year.

About EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

  • Overview: The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), in force since June 2023, aims to ensure that certain products sold within or exported to the EU do not originate from land deforested or degraded after 31 December 2020.
  • Purpose: Designed to curb EU-driven deforestation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect global biodiversity.
  • Scope: Applies to timber and six agricultural commodities—cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soy—along with derived products (e.g., beef, chocolate, furniture).
  • Conditions for Market Access:
    • Must be deforestation-free.
    • Produced in compliance with national laws of the country of origin.
    • Backed by a due diligence statement verifying compliance.
