Ashfaqulla Khan stands as one of India’s bravest figures during the fight for independence. He made a significant contribution to the revolutionary movement that wanted to end the British Raj through valour and sacrifice. Ashfaqulla Khan was born on 22 October 1900 in Shahjahanpur in the North-Western Province of British India. A Muslim Pathan, Khan grew up with ideals of courage and patriotism and since his early youth felt deeply about India’s freedom, wanting to fight for it. Ashfaqulla Khan’s close friendship with Ram Prasad Bismil became a symbol of Hindu–Muslim unity in the fight against the British Raj. Khan later became a member of the Hindustan Republican Association and took part in revolutionary activities to overthrow British power.

He was inspired by several revolutionary leaders like Ram Prasad Bismil, Lala Har Dayal, and others. Ashfaqulla Khan was not convinced by the idea of submitting petitions. He felt that a strong message should be sent to the British Empire.

Ashfaqulla Khan’s Contribution to India’s Freedom Struggle

Ashfaqulla Khan is known to be one of the bravest revolutionaries in the history of India. He worked wholeheartedly in order to make India free from British rule. Ashfaqulla Khan was a role model for many due to his honesty, boldness and the sacrifices that he made for the nation. His contribution was the one which created a deep impact on the freedom struggle of India.

Helped in the formation of Hindustan Republican Association (HRA)

Ashfaqulla Khan majorly contributed in the formation of Hindustan Republican Association. This organization believed that India could only become free with the use of strong action. He was active in making a contribution to this association along with Ram Prasad Bismil, as they along with other revolutionaries, used to build this organization. HRA made use of the armed struggle to accomplish its goals. 

Ashfaqulla Khan also helped in this area, as he used to plan things to be done for the organization and also motivated the members to move forward. He also used to create a sense of patriotism amongst the young generation.

Played a significant role in the Kakori Train Action

Kakori Train Action is one of his biggest contributions to the freedom struggle. This action was taken on 9 August 1925 in order to take back the government’s money and use it for the purpose of the freedom struggle. He made a significant contribution to the success of this act, as he helped in making preparations for the action, selecting a site and also took part in the mission. This created a fear in the minds of the British government, that their power could be challenged directly by the Indian youth, and this incident also helped in infusing new strength in the revolutionary movement.

Motivated young minds by expressing patriotism through poetry

He was a fine Urdu poet as well and used to write under the pen name of “Hasrat”. In his writings, patriotism, courage, and hope to witness India as a free nation could be seen. His writings used to inspire the youth to come forward and join the struggle for independence. His emotions could be felt through his writings.

Continued the freedom movement during his time of living in hiding

Post the Kakori incident, most of the revolutionaries were arrested. Ashfaqulla Khan, however, was untraced for many months, where he took a fake identity and also worked in an engineering company. He continued to think of ways through which he could further the cause of the freedom struggle. He used to save his money and resources to go abroad and collect for the revolution. This dedication of Ashfaqulla Khan in his time of hiding is a clear testimony of his patriotism towards India.

Ashfaqulla Khan Death

Ashfaqulla Khan was awarded the death sentence in the Kakori Train Action case. The British government hanged him on 19 December 1927 in Faizabad Jail. He bravely accepted his death sentence; his last words on the scaffold were “I am proud to die for the sake of my motherland.” His selfless sacrifice for the country inspired many young Indians.
