Livestock Sector Growth

  • Rapid GVA Expansion:
    • The Indian livestock sector has recorded exceptional growth over the past decade.
    • Its Gross Value Added (GVA) rising by nearly 195% between 2014–15 and 2023–24, significantly surpassing the growth rate of the crop sector.
  • Dominant Contributor to Agriculture: This accelerated growth has made livestock a major pillar of agricultural income, contributing 31% of the total Agricultural GVA in 2023-24 and generating nearly one-third of the total value from agriculture and allied activities.
  • Share in National GVA: It has continuously accounted for 5.5% of the national GVA at current prices, serving as a vital buffer during economic fluctuations.
  • Export Growth
    • The sector has also seen a continued rise in exports, with livestock product exports reaching ₹66,249 crore in 2024–25.
    • This is largely due to the strong performance of the meat industry, especially the increase in exports of bovine meat and other edible offal.
  • Agriculture’s Overall Share: The livestock sector’s importance is further highlighted through its contribution to Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing—which together accounted for 17.8% of the national GVA in 2023-24.
