INS Taragiri, a Project 17A Nilgiri-class frigate built by MDL, was delivered to the Indian Navy on 28 November 2025.

About INS Taragiri

• INS Taragiri is the fourth ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) and the third built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd (MDL).
• It is the modern reincarnation of the erstwhile Leander-class INS Taragiri that served from 1980 to 2013.
• The ship is designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and embodies advanced indigenous naval engineering.
• Key Features
  • Equipped with CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) propulsion, driving Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP).
  • Integrated with a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for platform automation.
  • Fitted with an advanced weapons–sensor suite, including BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile (SSM), MF-STAR (Multi-Function Surveillance, Track and Guidance Radar), MRSAM (Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile) complex, 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM), Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), and anti-submarine rockets and torpedoes.
  • Incorporates stealth features, enhanced survivability, and modular construction techniques.
• Significance
  • Demonstrates India’s Aatmanirbharta in complex warship design and shipbuilding with 75% indigenous content.
  • Provides significant employment generation, involving over 200 MSMEs and thousands of workers.
  • Strengthens the Navy’s multi-mission capability for emerging maritime challenges.

About Project 17A

• Project 17A is the Indian Navy’s programme to build stealth guided-missile frigates, succeeding the Shivalik-class (Project 17).
• Initiated to enhance stealth, automation, and firepower in frontline warships.
• The first ship of the Project 17A, ‘Nilgiri’ was launched on September 28, 2019 and went for sea trials in 2024.
• Target : The project aims to build seven frigates, with four at MDL and three at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers(GRSE).
