Microbe-Based “Self-Healing” Cement for Nuclear Waste Storage

According to a new experiment, billions of alkaline-loving microbes could offer a new way to protect nuclear waste buried deep underground.

Geological Disposal Facilities (GDFs)

  • A GDF is a system of engineered and natural barriers built hundreds of metres underground to isolate high-level and long-lived radioactive waste for thousands to lakhs of years.
  • GDFs combine  waste containers, cement or clay backfill, and a stable host rock (granite, clay, or salt formations).
  • They are recognised globally as the safest and most scientifically validated method for permanent disposal of nuclear waste.

The Problem with GDFs

  • Current deep underground nuclear waste repositories (GDFs) use cement to seal and support waste containers.
  • Over centuries, groundwater reacts with cement, creating microscopic cracks and pores.
  • These cracks could become pathways for radiation to escape back to the surface.

Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP)

  • Concept: Using specially selected microbes to create a natural, self-healing barrier.
  • How it Works:
    • Alkaline-loving microbes are introduced near the cement.
    • They consume available organic material and produce carbon dioxide (CO₂).
    • The CO₂ reacts with calcium and magnesium from the cement.
    • This reaction forms solid carbonate minerals (like calcite) that plug cracks and seal pores.
  • The MICP process shows promise as a long-term, self-repairing containment method of nuclear waste.
