“Lunar Ring” Project

Context: Japan’s Shimizu Corporation has proposed an ambitious “Lunar Ring” futuristic project to harness solar energy from the Moon.

  • The proposal has revived discussions on the feasibility of space-based solar power (SBSP) as a future clean energy source.

About Lunar Ring Project

  • It envisions a large-scale infrastructure to harness continuous solar energy and transmit it to Earth.
  • Key Features:
    • Extensive Solar Infrastructure: The project proposes the construction of an approximately 11,000 km-long belt of solar panels along the Moon’s equator to harness solar energy.
    • Continuous Solar Energy Capture: It is designed to capture near-continuous sunlight, utilizing the Moon’s rotational and orbital characteristics for uninterrupted energy generation.
    • Wireless Energy Transmission to Earth: The generated solar energy would be converted into microwaves and transmitted to Earth for practical and large-scale energy use.
    • Construction Approach: The project proposes the use of robots and automated systems for construction.
      • Utilises lunar soil (in-situ resource utilisation) to minimise the need for transporting materials from Earth.

About Space-Based Solar Power

  • It involves deploying solar panels in space (orbit or lunar surface) to capture sunlight continuously (24×7).
  • Energy is converted into microwaves or laser beams and transmitted to Earth.
  • Offers advantage of no atmospheric losses or night-time interruptions (in space).
