UPSC Nepali Literature Optional Syllabus: A Brief Overview

Nepali, which is part of the Indo-Aryan group of languages, is widely spoken in the hilly parts of north-east India, especially West Bengal and Assam. Other parts of the country, such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, also have many Nepali speakers.

The Nepali Literature syllabus for UPSC optional covers the history and growth of the Nepali language and literature, the language’s grammar, folklore, and different types of writing. Candidates are also required to study some specific literary works

Similar to other optional subjects, the Nepali literature optional syllabus is covered entirely through two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2, each having 250 marks. Both papers have eight questions, which are divided into two sections, each having four questions. A candidate has to attempt any five questions, with Question 1 and Question 5 being compulsory. Out of the remaining six, any three have to be chosen, with at least one from each section. Candidates attempting Nepali literature for the UPSC have to write the answers in Nepali using the Devanagari script.

Nepali Literature Optional Syllabus in Detail

Nepali literature optional syllabus will cover both the history, structure and features of Nepali language, and also analysis of certain literary works. So, candidates will be required to plan their strategy by going through the syllabus in detail.

Nepali Literature Optional Syllabus For Paper 1 

Paper 1 of the Nepali literature syllabus will cover the history and development of the Nepali language, the basic rules of Nepali grammar, different types of Nepali dialects, the history of Nepali literature, important literary movements, Nepali folklore, and more.

Section A
  1. History of the origin and development of Nepali as one of the new Indo Aryan Languages.
  2. Fundamentals of Nepali Grammar and phonology: 
    1. Nominal forms and categories: Gender, Number, Case, Adjectives, Pronouns, Avyayas 
    2. Verbal forms and categories: Tense, Aspects, Voice, Roots and Fixes
    3. Nepali Swara and Vyanjana; 
  3. Major Dialects of Nepali 
  4. Standardisation and Modernisation of Nepali with special reference to language movements (viz. Halanta Bahiskar, Jharrovad etc.) 
  5. Teaching of Nepali language in India—Its history and development with special reference to its socio-cultural aspects.
Section B
  1. History of Nepali literature with special reference to its development in India. 
  2. Fundamental concepts and theories of Literature: Kavya/Sahitya, Kavya Prayojan, Literary genres, Shabda Shakti, Rasa, Alankara, Tragedy, Comedy, Aesthetics, Stylistics. 
  3. Major literary trends and movements— Swachchhandatavad, Yatharthavad, Astitwavad, Ayamik Movement, Contemporary Nepali writings, Postmodernism. 
  4. Nepali folklores (the following folk-form only)—Sawai, Jhyaurey, Selo, Sangini, Lahari.

Nepali Literature Optional Syllabus For Paper 2

Paper II covers diverse genres such as poetry, prose, drama, and essays, each contributing to the nation’s literary heritage. It serves as a testament to the resilience, creativity, and imagination of Nepali writers across generations.
