On June 6, 1997, a group of countries in the Bay of Bengal region came together in Bangkok to form a new organization called BIST-EC, which stood for Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand Economic Cooperation. Later, on December 22, 1997, during a special meeting in Bangkok, Myanmar joined the group, leading to a change in its name to ‘BIMST-EC,’ where the ‘M’ now represented Myanmar along with Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
In 1998, Nepal started participating as an observer in the activities of this regional cooperation group. Then, in February 2004, both Nepal and Bhutan upgraded their status to become full members.
