What is Asia Cup

The Asia Cup, officially named the ACC Men’s Asia Cup, is a cricket tournament where Asian countries compete. This tournament alternates between One Day International (ODI) format (50 overs) and Twenty20 International (T20) format (20 overs). It was established in 1983 as part of the Asian Cricket Council’s efforts to promote goodwill among Asian nations. Originally, it was supposed to be held every two years, and it’s the sole continental championship in cricket, crowning the champion of Asia.

Asia Cup History

The first Asia Cup took place in 1984 in Sharjah, UAE, where the ACC had its offices until 1995. In 1986, India boycotted due to strained relations with Sri Lanka, and Pakistan did the same in 1990-91 because of political tensions with India. The 1993 tournament was canceled for similar reasons. From 2009 onward, the tournament became biennial, and all Asia Cup games have official ODI status according to the ICC.

Starting in 2016, the format alternated between ODI and T20I to align with upcoming world events. The 2016 Asia Cup was the first to be played in the T20I format and served as preparation for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20.

India leads the way with eight titles (seven ODI and one T20I), making them the most successful team. Sri Lanka is second with six titles, while Pakistan has secured the championship twice. Sri Lanka holds the record for the most Asia Cup participations (15), followed by India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh (14 each).
