The UPSC CSE Preliminary examination is the crucial first stage of the selection process, determining candidates’ eligibility for the UPSC CSE Mains Examination. Aspirants eagerly await the UPSC CSE Prelims result as it marks the first milestone towards their dream of serving the nation.
The UPSC Preliminary examination comprises two papers: General Studies (Paper-I) and General Studies Paper-II–Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The General Studies paper consists of 100 questions, each carrying 2 marks, while the CSAT paper consists of 80 questions, with each question carrying 2.5 marks. Both papers have a time limit of two hours.

The UPSC CSE Main Exam is the second phase of the selection process for prestigious services like IAS, IFS, and other Group A and B services. It consists of nine written papers, including compulsory and optional subjects. Compulsory papers include Essays, General Studies Papers I to IV, and English and Regional Language Papers, while candidates can choose any one subject, which is divided into two papers from a list of 48 for the optional papers. Each paper has a duration of three hours, except for the English and Regional Language Paper, which is two hours.
