UPSC to Release Provisional Answer Key for the First Time

The Union Public Service Commission has announced a major reform in the Civil Services Examination process by deciding to release the Provisional Answer Key for UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 soon after the examination.

This will be the first time that UPSC will publish a provisional answer key after the Prelims exam instead of releasing the final answer key after the entire recruitment process concludes.

Calling it “a new beginning”, UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar said,

“For the first time, the Union Public Service Commission will release the Provisional Answer Key for the Civil Services Examination. This initiative reflects the Commission’s ongoing endeavour to bring greater transparency, responsiveness, and timely communication with candidates.”

This new initiative is expected to help lakhs of aspirants evaluate their performance early and reduce uncertainty after the examination.

How to Submit Objections Against the UPSC Provisional Answer Key Through QPRep

Following the release of the provisional answer key, candidates will be given an opportunity to challenge any answer or question they believe is incorrect through UPSC’s newly introduced online representation system.

What is QPRep?

QPRep, or the Online Question Paper Representation Portal, is the official digital platform launched by the Union Public Service Commission for submitting objections related to the UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 provisional answer key.

Through this portal, candidates can raise objections against disputed questions or answers by submitting supporting academic evidence and proper justification. The portal is expected to streamline the representation process and ensure that objections are reviewed systematically by subject experts.

Requirements to Submit the Representation

Candidates filing representations through the QPRep portal must provide the following details while submitting the representation of any question or answer:

  • The answer they consider correct
  • A concise explanation supporting their claim
  • Documentary evidence from three authentic academic or official sources

UPSC has clarified that supporting documents may include standard reference books, government publications, official reports, journals, or other credible educational material. Representations without proper justification or valid supporting evidence may not be considered during evaluation.

Last Date to Submit Representation

The Commission has announced that representations regarding the provisional answer key can be submitted till 31 May 2026, 6:00 PM.

Candidates are advised to complete the submission process well before the deadline to avoid server issues, incomplete uploads, or last-minute technical difficulties.

How These Representations Will Be Evaluated

UPSC has stated that all objections submitted through the QPRep portal will undergo a structured evaluation process conducted by expert committees. These committees will comprise specialists and subject experts with domain knowledge relevant to the disputed questions.

During the review process, the expert panels will:

  • Examine each representation individually
  • Verify the authenticity and relevance of submitted documents
  • Evaluate the correctness of the representations
  • Record detailed observations on disputed questions
  • Recommend necessary corrections, if required

Only after the completion of this review process will UPSC prepare and release the final answer key for the examination. This mechanism is intended to ensure fairness while maintaining the credibility and integrity of the Civil Services Examination process.

How the Provisional Answer Key Will Benefit UPSC Aspirants

The provisional answer key system introduced by the Union Public Service Commission is expected to improve transparency and give aspirants greater clarity regarding their performance in the Civil Services Preliminary Examination.

  • Reduces dependence on unofficial answer keys
  • Allows candidates to challenge doubtful questions
  • Helps aspirants estimate scores early
