New GI-Tagged Products of Tamil Nadu

Five Tamil Nadu products including Woraiyur cotton sari and Thooyamalli rice—recently received GI tags, raising the State’s total to GI Tagged Products to 74.

  • Handwoven in Manamedu using cotton yarn from Coimbatore and Rajapalayam.
  • Traditional dyes sourced from Jayamkondam enhance colour authenticity.
Kavindapadi Nattu Sakkarai (Erode)

New GI-Tagged Products

  • Made by crushing local sugarcane and slow evaporation of juice.
  • Supported by fertile fields irrigated by the Lower Bhavani Project canal.
Thooyamalli Rice (Tamil Nadu)

New GI-Tagged Products

  • Traditional 135–140 day sambha-season rice variety meaning “pure jasmine.”
  • GI application backed by TN Marketing Board and NABARD Madurai forum.
Namakkal Makkal Pathirangal (Kalchatti)

New GI-Tagged Products

  • Soapstone cookware known for excellent heat retention and ancient lineage.
  • GI secured after renewed application by Namakkal Stone Products Manufacturers (2022).
Ambasamudram Choppu Saman (Tirunelveli)

New GI-Tagged Products

  • Handcrafted wooden miniature toys made for over two centuries.
  • Crafted from local woods like Manjal Kadamba, teak, and rosewood.
