Chief Minister of Delhi

Today, the Indian Political Diaspora recognizes the name Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. He began his journey as a notable social activist and later stepped into the realm of politics. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from IIT Kharagpur in West Bengal.

His career took a turn when he joined the civil service, specifically the Indian Revenue Service, in 1993. During this time, he met Sunita, his life partner, and they got married in 1995. An interesting note in his journey is his interaction with Mother Teresa, as he spent time at her ashram in Kalighat.

As a prominent figure, Kejriwal devoted himself to social causes. In 2006, he founded the Public Cause Research Foundation after leaving his job, and in 1999, he initiated the Parivartan movement to expose fraudulent ration card activities. His efforts extended to aiding Delhi’s citizens in matters related to income tax, electricity, and food rations.

A pivotal moment emerged when Kejriwal collaborated with the renowned social activist Anna Hazare in the early 2010s, advocating for the Jan Lokpal bill. This marked a transformative juncture. Kejriwal proceeded to establish the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and participated in the 2013 Delhi assembly election, securing 28 out of 70 seats. He formed a coalition government with the Indian National Congress and took office as the Chief Minister. However, his tenure was short-lived, lasting only 49 days, as he couldn’t pass the Jan Lokpal bill.

Subsequent events unfolded, including the 16th Lok Sabha Election where he contested in the Varanasi constituency against Narendra Modi, and the 2015 Delhi assembly election where his party achieved an extraordinary 67 out of 70 seats, leading to his return as Delhi’s seventh Chief Minister. His ability to retain this position in the capital city highlights his astute political acumen and distinctive approach to governance.
