Recently, A national-level workshop on the revival of the Aravalli mountains was inaugurated in Udaipur, Rajasthan on the eve of International Day for Biodiversity. 

  • The workshop outlined a detailed Action Plan for Aravalli Landscape Restoration.

Key Highlights of the Action Plan

  • Action Plan for Restoration  : The released Action Plan follows a science-based, community-led, and policy-supported roadmap built around five pillars:
    • Ecological Restoration – Natural regeneration, native species plantation, soil & moisture conservation.

International Day for Biodiversity 2025

  • It is celebrated annually to raise awareness of the significance of biodiversity. 
  • Established by:  The United Nations to promote conservation and sustainable use of biological resources.
  • This day was originally celebrated on December 29 but later shifted to 22 May in 2000  to mark the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992.
  • Theme 2025:  Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.

    • Community Participation – Engaging local communities, women, and youth in conservation efforts.
    • Policy and Governance – Strengthening regulatory frameworks and scheme integration.
    • Sustainable Livelihoods – Boosting eco-tourism, agroforestry, and non-timber forest enterprises.
    • Research and Innovation – Leveraging GIS mapping, remote sensing, and ecological restoration techniques.

About Aravalli Landscape

  • The Aravalli Range is located in North-Western India.
  • It stretches for about 670 km in a south-west direction.
  • The range starts near Delhi, runs through southern Haryana and Rajasthan, and ends near Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

  • Aravalli Green Wall Project
    • A large-scale ecological restoration program to revive the Aravalli Range.
    • Focuses on afforestation, biodiversity conservation, water restoration, and climate resilience.
    • Covers Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat to combat desertification and deforestation.
    • Includes initiatives like removal of invasive species, eco-tourism development, and water conservation.

  • The highest peak in the Aravalli Range is Guru Shikhar in Mount Abu.
  • Geological Significance
    • The Aravalli Range is considered among the oldest mountain ranges in the world.
    • It was formed during the Proterozoic Era, highlighting its ancient geological history.
