Biostimulants: The Green Solution for Sustainable Indian Agriculture

Biostimulants offer promising, sustainable alternative chemical fertilisers to secure the future of Indian agriculture.

What Are Biostimulants?

  • Biostimulants are eco-friendly substances or microorganisms that stimulate natural plant processes regardless of their nutrient content.
  • Primary Role: Enhance nutrient uptake, boost stress tolerance, improve crop quality, and build climate resilience.

Types of Biostimulants

  • Botanical Extracts: From seaweed, kelp, or plants, rich in hormones and growth promoters.
  • Microbial Products: Beneficial bacteria (PGPRs) or fungi that fix nitrogen, solubilize minerals, or produce hormones.
  • Amino Acids & Protein Hydrolysates: Provide building blocks for plant proteins and enzymes, aiding stress recovery.
  • Humic & Fulvic Acids: Improve soil structure, nutrient chelation, and uptake.
  • Inorganic Compounds: Beneficial elements like silicon, cobalt, or selenium.
  • Chitosan: Biopolymers that boost stress resistance.

Key Benefits of biostimulants (Ecosystem Services)

  • Efficiency: Improve Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE).
  • Soil Health: Aid soil carbon sequestration and improve structure.
  • Resilience: Help crops withstand drought, salinity, and temperature extremes.
  • Biodiversity: Support soil microbial life and ecological balance.
  • Circular Economy: Often derived from agricultural/food waste, turning waste into value.
  • Their alignment with UN SDGs (Zero Hunger, Climate Action, etc.) makes them a cornerstone of green agriculture.

The Chemical Fertiliser Crisis

  • Chemical fertilisers and pesticides were central to India’s Green Revolution and food security. However, their excessive use now poses severe threats.
  • Overuse: National average consumption is 139.81 kg/ha (2023-24), with states like Punjab applying 247.61 kg/ha.
  • Consequences:
    • Declining soil fertility and environmental pollution.
    • Increased farmer dependency on costly inputs.
    • Health risks for rural communities.
    • ~19% of agriculture-related GHG emissions.
    • A deepening cycle of vulnerability to climate change.

Challenges to Widespread Adoption of Biostimulants

  • Farmer Skepticism: Caution about effectiveness compared to conventional inputs.
  • Scientific Uncertainty: Gaps in scientific understanding of plant-physiological responses to biostimulants.
  • Variable Results: Variable performance results across soil types and agro-climatic zones.
  • Market Issues: Market flooding with unregulated or substandard products, which erodes farmer trust.

Regulation of Biostimulants in India:

  • The Government of India brought biostimulants under the Fertiliser Control Order (FCO), 1985 in February 2021.
  • Currently biostimulants are classified into 9 categories including botanical extracts, humic and fulvic acids, protein hydrolysates, vitamins, antioxidants, and live microorganisms.

The Way Forward

  • Farmer Empowerment: Awareness campaigns, field demonstrations, and digital extension platforms.
  • Research & Development: Investment in molecular-level studies of biostimulant action, crop-specific formulations, and synergy with biofertilisers.
  • Policy & Regulation: Streamline approvals, enforce strict quality monitoring, and offer R&D/startup incentives.
  • Infrastructure Support: Develop processing facilities for raw materials (seaweed, crop residues, agro-waste).
  • Financial Access: Provide credit lines, subsidies, or tax benefits for farmers adopting biostimulants.
  • Collaborative Models: Foster Public-Private Partnerships, support startups and cooperatives, and engage with international biotech firms.
