The Buddhist Relics of Ratnagiri

Recent archaeological excavations at Ratnagiri have unveiled remarkable artefacts, shedding light on the site’s historical importance.

About Ratnagiri

Buddhist Relics

  • Ratnagiri is located in Odisha’s Jajpur district.
  • The site is surrounded by the Brahmani, Kimiria, and Birupa rivers.
  • It  is a significant Buddhist heritage site renowned for its ancient monasteries, stupas, and intricate sculptures.

Historical Significance

  • Ratnagiri, meaning “Hill of Jewels,” flourished as a major Buddhist centre from the 5th to the 13th centuries CE.
  • It played a pivotal role in the development of the Vajrayana (Tantrayana) school of Buddhism.
  • The site’s decline began in the 13th century due to invasions, but it continued to be active until the 16th century.
  • Initial excavations between 1958 and 1961 revealed extensive Buddhist establishments, including a brick stupa, three monastic complexes, eight temples, and over 700 votive stupas.

The Archaeological Findings

  • Buddha Head (1.4 meters tall): The largest ever discovered in Odisha, possibly in all of India.
  • Votive Stupas: Arranged in a sequence, signifying spiritual offerings and the site’s role as a pilgrimage destination.
  • Monasteries & Shrine Complex: Remains of two monasteries and a central stupa, indicating their use for religious veneration.
  • Stone Tablets & Inscriptions: Featuring Sanskrit text in Kutila script (Siddhamatrika), affirming the site’s deep Buddhist connections.
  • Buddhist Deities & Symbols: Sculptures of Amoghasiddhi, Ratnasambhava, Akshobhya, Amitabha, Tara, and Marici, reflecting Buddhist iconography.
  • Brick and Stone Structures: Demonstrating advanced masonry techniques that have endured through time.
  • Shrine Complex: Unlike the ‘chaitya griha’ found in nearby sites, Ratnagiri features a shrine complex with a unique shape.
    • The presence of votive stupas in an arranged sequence suggests the existence of this complex.

Conclusion

Ratnagiri’s excavation has unveiled a treasure trove of Buddhist heritage, highlighting the advanced skills of ancient artisans and the extensive influence of Buddhist followers. While challenges remain in terms of land issues and further excavation, the site holds immense potential for understanding India’s rich Buddhist history.
