Certification for Eri Silk

The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. (NEHHDC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, has obtained the Oeko-Tex certification from Germany for eri silk. 

  • This certification enhances the global marketability, safety compliance, and appeal of eri silk in international markets, particularly for buyers seeking eco-friendly, sustainable, and chemical-free textiles.

About Oeko-Tex Certification

  • It is an internationally recognized certification for textiles, including yarns, fabrics, threads, buttons, linens, and other accessories.
  • It certifies that these materials are tested and free from harmful substances, ensuring the products’ safety and suitability for human use. 
  • Having this certification increases consumer confidence and meets international safety and sustainability standards.

About Eri Silk

  • Eri Silk, primarily produced in Northeast India, is renowned globally as the world’s only vegan silk, characterized by its ethical, cruelty-free production method
  • Unlike traditional silk harvesting methods, eri silk allows moths to naturally emerge from their cocoons, preserving their lives. 
  • This compassionate approach positions eri silk as eco-friendly, sustainable, and ethically responsible within the global textile industry.

Other Types of Silk in India 

India produces several types of silk, notably:

  • Mulberry Silk: Most common type, accounting for the largest share of silk production in India, widely cultivated, particularly in southern states like Karnataka.
  • Tasar Silk: Primarily produced in Central India and Jharkhand, known for its coarse texture and durability.
  • Muga Silk: Indigenous to Assam, renowned globally for its natural golden-yellow sheen and durability.

Government of India Initiatives to Promote Sericulture

  • The Central Silk Board has implemented multiple initiatives aimed at modernizing and promoting the growth of India’s sericulture industry.
  • Central Muga & Eri Research Institute: Established at Lahdoigarh, Assam, this institute conducts specialized research, offers training, and provides extension support for eri and muga silk development.
  • Innovative Research and Modernization: Promotes modernization through research, demonstration, and dissemination of improved practices and technologies to enhance productivity and quality in silk production.
  • Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization: Set up to ensure the consistent production and availability of high-quality eri silkworm seed, essential for robust and sustainable production.
  • Silk Samagra-2 Scheme (2021-2026): A comprehensive government scheme focused on the holistic development of the sericulture sector across India, including capacity building, quality enhancement, technological support, and market expansion, significantly benefiting eri silk producers.
