CITIIS Programme

Context: 

The Union government approved the second phase of the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) project.

About CITIIS Project:

  • CITIIS, or the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain, is a sub-component of the Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission.
  • Aim: To promote integrated waste management and climate oriented reform actions.
  • Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
  • Implementing partners: French Development Agency (AFD), Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the European Union (EU), and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA)
  • Span: Four years from 2023­ to 2027.
  • Funding for CITIIS 2.0: 
    1. A loan of ₹1,760 crore from AFD and KfW, split equally
    2. A technical assistance grant of ₹106 crore from the European Union.
  • Major components: 
    1. Financial and technical support for developing projects focused on building climate resilience
    2. Adaptation and mitigation in up to 18 smart cities
    3. Interventions at centre, State and city levels to further climate governance.
