Recently, Ahmedabad has been recommended as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), marking a prelude to India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics.

• The formal approval will be sought at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in November , 2025.

About the Commonwealth Games

• Introduction: The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years, featuring athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.
• Origin: The first Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. Originally known as the British Empire Games, the inaugural event brought together athletes from 11 countries and territories.
• • India first competed in the II British Empire Games in 1934.
  • The games were named as Commonwealth Games in 1978.
• Organised by: The Games are overseen by Commonwealth Sport, which evaluates candidate cities based on infrastructure, governance, athlete experience, and alignment with Commonwealth values.
• Participants: Birmingham 2022 CWG featured 72 teams, including the 54 Commonwealth of Nations countries and 18 territories.

India and the Commonwealth Games

• India first hosted the CWG in 2010 in Delhi, which faced criticism due to delays and poor planning.
• The best performance so far was in Birmingham 2022, where India finished fourth on the medal table with 61 medals, including 22 gold.
• The 2030 Games will symbolise a century of sporting excellence, collaboration, and shared values among the 74 member nations and territories of the Commonwealth.
