  • Energy Statistics India 2025 is an annual publication released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
  • The report provides a detailed analysis of India’s energy landscape.
  • It contains data including reserves, capacity, production, consumption, and trade of various energy commodities. 
  • The latest edition introduces a new chapter on Energy Account, following the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA), 2012 framework.

  • The Indian energy sector demonstrated a strong recovery post-pandemic, aligning with the country’s goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047. 
  • The report highlights significant growth in energy supply, consumption, and renewable energy capacity.
  • Growth in Primary Energy Supply: The Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) in India grew by 7.8% in FY 2023-24, reaching 9,03,158 KToE (Kilo Tonnes of Oil Equivalent).
  • Per Capita Energy Consumption: India’s per capita energy consumption increased from 14,682 Megajoules per person in 2014-15 to 18,410 Megajoules per person in 2023-24, growing at 2.55% CAGR.
  • Energy Statistics IndiaReduction in Transmission and Distribution Losses: Electricity losses due to transmission and distribution decreased significantly from 23% in 2014-15 to 17% in 2023-24, reflecting improved energy efficiency.
  • Sector-Wise Energy Consumption: The Industry sector recorded the highest growth, with energy consumption increasing from 2,42,418 KToE in 2014-15 to 3,11,822 KToE in 2023-24.
    • Other sectors, including Commercial and Public Services, Residential, Agriculture, and Forestry, also witnessed steady growth in energy consumption.

Renewable Energy Potential and Capacity

  • Potential: India’s renewable energy potential stands at 21,09,655 Megawatts as of March 31, 2024.
    • Energy Statistics IndiaWind power dominates with 11,63,856 Megawatts (55%), followed by solar energy at 7,48,990 Megawatts and large hydro at 1,33,410 Megawatts.
    • Four states—Rajasthan (20.3%), Maharashtra (11.8%), Gujarat (10.5%), and Karnataka (9.8%)—account for over half of India’s renewable energy potential.
  • Installed Capacity and Electricity Generation: The installed capacity for electricity generation from renewable sources rose from 81,593 Megawatts in 2015 to 1,98,213 Megawatts in 2024, reflecting a CAGR of 10.36%.
    • Electricity generation from renewable sources increased from 2,05,608 GWH in 2014-15 to 3,70,320 GWH in 2023-24, at a CAGR of 6.76%.
