Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024

NITI Aayog has released the fourth edition of its Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024.

About the Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024:

  • It is a comprehensive assessment tool to measure the export readiness of India’s States and Union Territories (UTs).
  • Purpose: To support India’s goal of achieving USD 1 trillion in merchandise exports by 2030 and the broader Viksit Bharat @2047 vision. 
  • Framework: The index is structured around Four Main Pillars, which are broken down into 13 sub-pillars and 70 indicators:
    • Export Infrastructure (20% weightage): Covers logistics, utilities, and industrial infrastructure.
    • Business Ecosystem (40% weightage): The most weighted pillar, assessing macroeconomy, cost competitiveness, human capital, MSME ecosystem, and access to finance.
    • Policy & Governance (20% weightage): Evaluates state export policies, institutional capacity, and trade facilitation.
    • Export Performance (20% weightage): Measures export outcomes, diversification, and global integration.
  • Classification: States and UTs are categorized for comparison into:
    • Large States, Small States, North Eastern States, and Union Territories.
    • Within categories, classified as Leaders (high preparedness), Challengers (moderate with improvement scope), and Aspirers (early-stage development).
  • Changes Introduced in EPI 2024: 
    • New dimensions like macroeconomic stability, cost competitiveness, human capital, and the MSME ecosystem are added. 
    • It also places greater emphasis on districts as key units for driving export competitiveness.
