The Ministry of Education released the India Rankings 2025, implementing the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) developed in 2015 to benchmark higher education institutions (HEIs) across India.

About National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)

• Purpose: NIRF offers a transparent, data-driven ranking system for universities, colleges, research institutions, and specialised Higher Education Institutions.
• Evolution: Launched in 2016 with 1 category and 3 subject domains, expanding to 9 categories and 8 subject domains by 2025.
• Participation: Over 14,000 institutions took part in 2025, reflecting growing credibility and inclusivity.
• Alignment: Guided by NEP 2020, the rankings aim to make Indian HEIs globally competitive, innovation-driven, and aligned with national development goals.
• Published by: The Ministry of Education, Government of India, with data support from Institutional submissions and third-party sources like Scopus, Web of Science, and Derwent Innovation.
