A recent report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) highlights the explosive growth of India’s digital creator economy and its transformative impact on consumer behavior.

Key Projections

  • Future Impact: The creator economy is expected to influence more than $1 trillion in annual consumer spending by 2030.
  • Current Scale: Creators influence more than 30% of consumer decisions, shaping $350–400 billion in spending today.
  • This represents a significant shift in how Indians discover and purchase products, moving from traditional advertising to creator-driven recommendations.
  • The ecosystem is expanding beyond Gen Z and metropolitan centres, reaching varied age groups and city tiers.

What is the Creator Economy?

  • The creator economy refers to a digital ecosystem where individuals create and share content across various platforms.
  • Unlike traditional media, where corporations control content distribution, the creator economy allows direct engagement between creators and their followers.
  • The Creator Economy is also known as the Orange Economy. 
  • Key Components of the Creator Economy:
    • Digital Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Twitch and Twitter.
    • Monetization Methods like Ad Revenue, Sponsorships and Affiliate Marketing.
    • Community Engagement: Unlike traditional media, the creator economy thrives on direct engagement with audiences.

The Creator Economy in India

  • The Scale of India’s Creator Economy:  India is home to over 80 million content creators, including influencers, bloggers, artists, and digital creators.
  • Market Size: India’s Creator Economy market size was valued at US$ 976.0 million in 2023 and is expected to reach US$ 3,926.2 million by 2030
    • India’s creator economy is growing at an unprecedented rate, with some estimates predicting a 45% CAGR by 2028. 
  • Employment Contribution: India’s creative economy contributes nearly 8% of the country’s employment, far surpassing countries like Turkey (1%), Mexico (1.5%), South Korea (1.9%), and Australia (2.1%).
  • Government initiatives like the AVGC Task Force (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming & Comics) and the $1 billion creative economy fund support the sector.

Key Government Initiatives to Promote Creator Economy

  • $1 Billion Creator Economy Fund (Announced March 2025): A public-private partnership fund to empower digital content creators by providing access to capital, skill development, production upgrades, and global market opportunities.
  • World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025: Held in Mumbai. Flagship global summit positioned India as a hub for media, entertainment, and creator economy. 
    • It showcased top creators, and included platforms like WAVES Bazaar—an e-marketplace connecting Indian creators with international buyers and investors.
  • Create in India Challenge: Launched in 2024 as part of WAVES preparations.
    • This initiative featured multiple competitions (e.g., animation, filmmaking, gaming, music, AI art, reel-making, and thematic challenges like “Make the World Wear Khadi”.
  • Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT): This upcoming institute in Mumbai will train talent in creative and digital technologies, focusing on media, entertainment, and content production skills.
  • National Creators Award: An annual award presented by the Prime Minister to recognize excellence in digital content creation across categories.
