India will host the 89th General Meeting (GM) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from 15–19 September 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. 

• This is the fourth time India is hosting the prestigious event (earlier in 1960, 1997, and 2013).

About International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

• Overview: The IEC is a global standard-setting organization that prepares and publishes international standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies. It ensures safety, efficiency, and interoperability in these fields.
• Establishment: Founded in 1906, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
• Membership: Comprises 89 member countries, including India, which participate in developing common technical standards.
• Functions:
  • Develops international standards for electric power generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, semiconductors, batteries, nanotechnology, and smart grids.

• • Promotes harmonization of technical standards to facilitate global trade and technological cooperation.
  • Works in collaboration with other bodies like the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Significance for India

• India is a full member of IEC and participates actively through the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
• Indian experts contribute to technical committees on renewable energy, smart grids, e-mobility, and energy storage.
• IEC standards are increasingly integrated into Indian regulatory frameworks to align domestic industries with global practices.
