As part of India’s growing maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), INS Sunayna made its maiden port call at Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania on April 12, 2025.

• INS Sunayna will participate in Exercise AIKEYME, a multilateral naval drill aimed at enhancing operational coordination.

About IOS SAGAR Initiative

• The Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative is a maritime security cooperation mission in the Southwest Indian Ocean Region.
• Participants: India plus 9 nations (Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, South Africa).
• Activities: INS Sunayna will make port calls at Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), Nacala (Mozambique), Port Louis (Mauritius), Port Victoria (Seychelles), and Male (Maldives).
  • The initiative includes joint surveillance of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of partner nations and training programs at Indian naval institutions in Kochi.
• Significance: IOS SAGAR strengthens regional maritime security, promotes freedom of navigation, and reinforces India’s commitment to being a net security provider in the IOR.

• INS Sunayna is an offshore patrol vessel designed for surveillance, search and rescue, and maritime patrol missions.
• It is equipped for long-range deployments and hosts advanced navigation, communication, and surveillance systems, allowing it to operate effectively across diverse maritime environments.
