Kathputli

In Jaipur’s Kathputli Nagar, nearly 250 hereditary families continue the centuries-old tradition of Kathputli puppetry.

This sustains Rajasthan’s folk culture amid urbanisation and competition from modern digital entertainment.

Puppetry in India

Kathputli

  • It is one of India’s most ancient forms of storytelling, acting as a composite art that integrates painting, sculpture, music, and drama.
  • History: Kathputli is believed to be over 1,000 years old and was traditionally performed by travelling Bhat and Nat communities to entertain and educate village audiences during fairs, royal courts and festivals.
  • Archaeological Evidence: Excavations at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro have revealed terracotta figurines with sockets and movable limbs.
  • Literary Reference:
    • Silappadikaram (1st – 2nd century BC): ThisTamil epic contains early references to the craft.
    • Natyashastra: It refers to the Sutradhar (literally “the holder of strings”), showing the influence of puppetry on classical theater.
  • Classification: Indian puppetry is broadly categorized into four types based on manipulation:
    • String,
    • Shadow,
    • Rod, and
    • Glove.

About Kathputli- The String Puppets of Rajasthan

  • The word Kathputli is a blend of Kath (wood) and Putli (doll).
  • Geographic Hubs: While practiced across Rajasthan (Nagaur, Churu, Sikar), Kathputli Nagar in Jaipur is its largest living hub.
  • Key Features:
    • Anatomy: Carved from a single piece of wood, these puppets have oval faces, large eyes, and arched eyebrows.
    • No-Leg Rule: They are characterized by long trailing skirts and generally lack legs, allowing for a fluid, floating movement.
    • Manipulation: Unlike other string puppets with complex cross-bars, Kathputlis are controlled by a simple string loop wrapped around the puppeteer’s fingers.
  • The Performance:
    • Voice: : The puppeteer uses a bamboo-and-rubber whistle called a ‘Boli’ for shrill, stylized voice.
    • Musical Score: Accompanied by Dholak and Harmonium.
    • Themes:
      • Traditional: hivalry of Rajput heroes like Amar Singh Rathore
      • Modern: ocial satire and moral tales.
