Kaziranga Tiger Reserve Ranks 3rd Globally in Tiger Density, Says 2024 Report

Kaziranga Tiger Reserve (KTR) in Assam now holds the world’s third-highest tiger density, according to a 2024 report released by the KTR on  Global Tiger Day.

Current Status of Tiger Population in KTR as per the 2024 report

  • Total Tiger Count (2024): 148 tigers across 1,307.49 sq. km
    • It includes 83 Females, 55 Males and 10 Undetermined Gender.
  • Tiger Density: 18.65 tigers per 100 sq. km
  • Survey Methodology: Spatially Explicit Capture-Recapture (SECR) method
    • The SECR method estimates animal population density and related parameters by analyzing detection data from arrays of passive detectors.
  • Earlier estimates: The first estimation in Kaziranga in 1997 recorded 80 tigers. The number gradually increased to 121 in the 2019 estimation but dipped to 104 in the 2022 Tiger Census.

  • Introduction: Kaziranga is globally renowned for its rich biodiversity and is home to the iconic one-horned rhinoceros and a significant tiger population.
  • Location: Situated in the northeastern state of Assam, it spans across the districts of Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath, and Karbi Anglong.
  • Rivers: The Brahmaputra River constitutes the dynamically changing Northern boundary of the National park.
    • The other rivers in Kaziranga are Diphlu, Mora Diphlu and Mora Dhansiri.
  • Tiger Reserve Status: Declared a Tiger Reserve in 2007 under Project Tiger, it is a part of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot.
  • Conservation Importance: Apart from tigers, Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for efforts in habitat restoration and anti-poaching measures.

Key Factors Behind Population Growth

  • Habitat Expansion:
    • 200 sq. km added across the landscape
    • 12.82 sq. km of encroachment-free land included
    • Notable additions in Burhachapori-Laokhowa sanctuaries in the Nagaon Division of the TR.
  • Increased Protection & Monitoring:
    • Enhanced anti-encroachment drives
    • Improved forest connectivity
    • More efficient survey and documentation
