Medical Value Tourism & AYUSH Push in Union Budget: India’s Global Healthcare Vision

In the Union Budget, the Finance Minister announced measures to position India as a global hub for Medical Value Tourism (MVT) and to strengthen the AYUSH ecosystem.

Medical Value Tourism (MVT) refers to travel by international or domestic patients to another country or region to obtain medical treatment, often combined with tourism and wellness services.

Scheme for Regional Medical Hubs

  • Medical Tourism Promotion: The Government proposed a scheme to support States in establishing five Regional Medical Hubs, in partnership with the private sector, to promote India as a hub for medical tourism services.
  • Integrated Healthcare Complexes: These hubs will function as integrated healthcare complexes combining medical, educational and research facilities.
  • Key Components: The hubs will include AYUSH Centres, Medical Value Tourism Facilitation Centres, and infrastructure for diagnostics, post-care and rehabilitation.
  • Medical Value TourismEmployment Opportunities: The hubs are expected to provide diverse job opportunities for health professionals, including doctors and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs).
  • Patient Experience: The hubs aim to enhance the experience of both international and domestic patients, strengthening India’s competitiveness in global healthcare services.

Key Budget Announcements for AYUSH

  • New Institutions: Setting up of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda to expand quality education, clinical care and research.
  • Quality Assurance: Upgradation of AYUSH pharmacies and Drug Testing Laboratories to ensure higher standards of quality, certification and skilled manpower.
  • Global Research and Training: Upgradation of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre, Jamnagar, to strengthen evidence-based research, training and global awareness of traditional medicine systems.

  • International Recognition: Yoga gained global recognition after being taken to the United Nations, while Ayurveda witnessed renewed global acceptance in the post-COVID period.
